Teacher Information

Materials Needed for English
Goals and Objectives: The successful student will gain mastery of the eighth grade Virginia SOLs for English and Writing. (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/english/2010/stds_english8.pdf) The successful student will continue to grow as a reader and writer through Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop, Word Study, and Silent Reading.
Class Expectations and Values
Be Kind: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The beauty of an English classroom is that we are encouraged to discuss our opinions, personal experiences, and ideas. This collaborative form of learning thrives off of respect, patience, tolerance, an open mind, and the courage to share. Therefore, rudeness, hate-speech, name-calling, etc. will not be allowed under any circumstances in our classroom.
Be Involved: Be prepared and ready for each class. Each student is expected to participate in class (whether as an individual, as a group member, or as a class member), which includes following directions and listening to someone when he or she is speaking. Students will receive participation grades each nine weeks.
Be Wise: Follow all school policies listed in the Student Handbook.
Grades
Total Points: Interim and final grades are based on total points.
Grading Scale: Students will be assessed using the Rockingham County standard grading scale, which can be found in the Parent-Student Handbook.
* Grades are averaged at the end of each nine weeks, semester, and year.
Electronic Device/Cell Phone Policy
At times, students will be allowed to use electronic devices and cellphones to aid in instruction and learning. Unless given permission from the teacher, students must keep devices off and away.
Late work policy
All assignments should be turned in on the date due. However, assignments may be turned in no later than one week prior to the end of each nine weeks. Work that is not turned in will receive a zero in the gradebook until the assignment is turned in. Consistent failure to complete classwork and/or homework may result in phone calls home.
Absent work policy
If students are absent, it is the student’s responsibility to get their assignments. Students need to meet with the teacher for make-up work.
